Dental Sealants

Information for you

Dental sealants are a preventative coating that cover the deep grooves in molars with a resin material (similar to that of a white filling) to help deter food from lingering and causing decay.

First, we will polish the tooth surface to make sure it is free from any debris. We then use an etch which makes the surface of the tooth temporarily porous, we will apply a primer and finally the resin sealant material which will be cured with a UV light.

Sealants can wear over time and may need to be replaced down the road. Sealants on permanent molars are currently covered for children under the age of 15 in NS through MSI.

What is a Sealant?

Sealants are clear or shaded coating that a dentist, dental hygienist or dental assistant puts on the chewing surfaces of molars (back teeth). This is where most decay happens. Sealing a tooth only takes a few minutes.
